Eight Parts of Speech
Words are divided into different kinds or classes. Parts of speech, according to their use, that is, according to the work they do in a sentence. The parts of speech are eight in number.
1. Noun
2. Adjective
3. Pronoun
4. Verb
5. Adverb
6. Preposition
7. Conjunction
8. Interjection
1. A Noun is word used as the name of person, place or thing; as –rose, the house, Saw Eh Tha Hser.
1) Saw Eh Tha Hser is a studious Student.
2) The rose smells sweet.
3) This house is beautiful.
2. An Adjective is a word used to add something to the meaning of a noun; as –brave, happy, shy.
1. He is a brave man.
2. Saw Eh Tha Hser is a happy boy.
3. Simon is a shy girl.
3. A Pronoun is a word used instead of a noun; as – he, she, and them.
1) Saw Eh Tha Hser is absent because he go Bank.
2) Most of the students are lazy, so the teacher urges them to work hard.
3) Naw Eh Wah is failed in exam because she is lazy.
4. A verb is a word used to express an action or state; as- write, are, go.
1. Saw Eh Tha Hser writes a letter to his mother every week.
2. My bosom friend, Saw Eh Tha Hser and I are going to play football at the present.
3. Michel Jackson said, I go to the moon but I didn’t divide Black & White.
5. An verb is a word used to add something to the meaning of a verb, an adjective,
or another adverb; as – quickly, very, quite.
1) Saw Eh Tha Hser sewed the shirt quickly.
2) This child is very clever.
3) She pronounced the word quite correct.
6. A Preposition is a word used with a noun or a pronoun to show how the person or thing denoted by the noun or pronoun stands in relation to something else; as in , on, of , under, above.
1. There is a chicken in the kitchen.
2. They are fond of music.
3. A fair little girl sat under a tree.
4. There is a lovely house on the hill.
5. She’s rented a room above a shop.
7. A conjunction is a word used to join words or sentences; as – and, but, although.
1) Sue and Rose are cousins.
2) I am fast but James missed the train.
3) He decided to go, although I begged him not to.
8. An interject is a word which expresses some sudden feeling; as alas!, wow!, oh!
1. Alas! He is dead.
2. Wow! Did you make that cake? It looks delicious?
3. Is that for me? Oh! you’re so kind.
